60 Things to do Besides Eat Sugar

Trying to give up your sugar is not an easy task, but a great life choice! It is tough road to walk down, one that not many want to. As an added stress, sweet, sugar treats are practically everywhere you look. It is hard to avoid something that is so prevalent in everyday life!

A useful technique to quell a sugar craving is to distract yourself. Keeping your mind busy with another activity can help your craving to pass more quickly, while re-training your brain. With every craving you resist, the more your brain will re-wire itself.

Below are some suggestions on what you can do when the craving strikes. You can use these ideas, create your own, or both! Save your list somewhere handy so you can access it quickly during a craving.

Physical Activities

  • Go for a 20 minute walk
  • Do some light weight-lifting. If you don’t have weights, you can use soup cans.
  • Practice yoga from a YouTube video
  • Go for a hike
  • Drink some water
  • Look up a new healthy recipe you would like to try
  • If you have a pedometer, get another 1,000 steps
  • Make yourself a sugar-free snack
  • Do 10 squats, push-ups, sit-ups, or jumping-jacks
  • Walk up and down your steps (if your home has stairs) several times

Self Care

  • List 10 things you are grateful for
  • Take a relaxing bath/shower
  • Start a bullet journal/add to your journal
  • Plan your dream vacation
  • Read a book that you have always wanted to
  • Make a bucket list
  • Wash your face
  • Make a point to watch the sunrise/sunset
  • Listen to relaxing music
  • Pet your dog/cat (or see if one of your friends will let you come visit their pet)

Be Creative

  • Pick a craft/art that you have always been interested in. Create a new board for that on Pinterest and start researching the topic.
  • Take pictures on your phone and play with the filter options
  • Draw a picture
  • Learn a new dance on YouTube
  • Color a picture
  • Sing a song
  • Using paper or an app, do a new floor plan and room design for one of the rooms in your home
  • Write a short story
  • Browse the Internet to find your perfect outfit
  • Make a blanket

Gain Knowledge

  • Download a free language learning app and start learning another language
  • Pick a topic that fascinates you. Create a YouTube playlist on that topic and watch it when you want.
  • Do a Sudoku or crossword puzzle
  • Read a book on history, science, or how-to do something
  • Look up a new healthy recipe you would like to try
  • Make a list of all the different things you would like to learn someday
  • Pick something around your home or work that you would like to know how to do. Spend an hour researching that topic.
  • Look at your community calendar or local college website. See if there are any community classes you would like to take.
  • Watch a news program
  • Go birdwatching, and see if you can use Google to identify the birds you see

Do something productive

  • Clean out your sock drawer
  • Wash a window
  • Take your car through the car wash

  • Go through your clothes and donate what you don’t want anymore

Do something nice

  • Write a letter to an old friend
  • Volunteer to help a neighbor with some of their chores
  • Make a bird feeder and hang it outside
  • Plant a flower in a flowerpot. Once it starts blooming, donate it to a local nursing home.

  • Visit an animal shelter and see if they could use a volunteer to pet cats, walk dogs, etc.
  • Call a loved one you haven’t talked to in awhile
  • Volunteer to walk a neighbors or friends dog
